Prior to their win on Friday, the world number 17 pair had staged an upset, taking down the former world number one pair of Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota 21-14, 24-22 in a second round contest. In the first round, they had stunned Thailand’s, Jongkolphan Kitiiharakul and Rawinda Prajongai.
With Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, HS Prannoy, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty, PV Sindhu, Arjun MR-Dhruv Kapila, Krishna Prasad Garaga-Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala and Shikha Gautam-Ashwini Bhat all eliminated from the competition already, Treesa and Gayatri are India’s last hope to salvage some silverware from this year’s edition.

Gopichand’s daughter Gayatri and Treesa raise India’s All-England hopes
Gayatri Gopichand Pullela and Treesa Jolly have had contrasting lives. Gayatri’s father runs a state-of-the-art badminton academy in Hyderabad and is credited with producing the country’s most-decorated shuttlers. Treesa’s father built her a mud court at Pulingome village in Kannur and switched to a tarpaulin surface when it rained.
Their varied journeys notwithstanding, on Friday, Treesa, 19, and Gayatri, 20, made it to their second successive All-England semi-final by beating Chinese Li Wei and Liu Xuan Xuan 21-14, 18-21, 21-12.
