Why Couldn’t Sports Athlete Shoot At The Birmingham Commonwealth Games This Time?

At first, shooting wasn’t on the list of events for the Birmingham Games because of “logistical problems.”

The Indian Olympic Association said it would not attend the event in July 2019, but after CGF president Louise Martin and CEO David Grevemberg visited India in November, the Indian Olympic Association took back its threat at the annual general body meeting in December.

Not only that, but the IOA also offered to host the Commonwealth Championships for shooting and archery in 2022, as long as the medals won in these two events were counted towards the total number of medals won by the countries that took part in the 2022 CWG.

They did this while withdrawing their call for a boycott.

When Did CGF Came Out With Official Announcement?

In February 2020, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) said that the Commonwealth shooting and archery championships would be held in Chandigarh in January 2022. The medals from these two events will be used to determine the “ranking of competing nations” at the Birmingham Games.

The CGF said in a release that one week after the Closing Ceremony of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, “the CGF shall issue a medal table that includes results from the Chandigarh 2022 Commonwealth Archery and Shooting Championships, as a further and final legitimate ranking of competing nations and territories from the respective competitions.”

As it turned out, the COVID-19 pandemic meant that neither the archery nor the shooting championships in Chandigarh could happen in July 2021.

How have Indian shooters done at the Commonwealth Games in the past?

When it comes to shooting, India has been one of the best at the Commonwealth Games.

In the women’s 10m air pistol, Manu Bhaker, who was only 16 years old at the time.

She beat Heena Sidhu, who was a year older than her, to win gold and set a Games record.

Anish Bhanwala, who was also competing for the first time.

Becoming the youngest Indian to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.

He did this at the age of 15. In the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol event, Bhanwala broke the Games record.

Shooting, wrestling, and archery did not make the initial list of sports for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Victoria, Australia.

This is not a good sign for the future of these sports at the event.
