Telecom companies are fighting with smartphone brands over e-SIMs: What, why and all other details – Gadgets Now


Telecom service providers and smartphone manufacturers are reportedly at loggerheads over electronic SIM or e-SIM phones. According to a report in Economic Times (ET), while telcos want e-SIMs to be made mandatory in phones, smartphone brands are opposing the move. The fight has brought the respective industry bodies, COAI and ICEA, against each other. Both the industry associations have sent letters to their respective ministries. COAI (Cellular Operators Association of India) represents telecom companies Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone. While Indian Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) is the apex industry body of mobile and electronics industry comprising manufacturers, brand owners and technology providers.
